Living Small in a Big World...being that place
“You were so brave getting your flu shot… where are we going next?”
“Merrill Mischief!”
No, we’re not Disney World—but around here, we’re pretty proud to be that place.
Merrill Mischief has quietly become the ultimate little (and sometimes not-so-little) reward in Morganton: the spot you visit after doing something hard, brave, or above-and-beyond. Our candy-, Christmas-, fudge-, and all-around-fun-filled shop sits right on the historic Courthouse Square, and lately it’s been buzzing with celebration.
Just last week we welcomed triumphant flu-shot conquerors, heroic hair-cut sitters, spelling-test aces, one mighty chore-chart slayer, and more than a few kids who simply faced something scary and came out smiling.
When I was growing up, my ultimate reward was a trip to McDonald’s for a cheeseburger and fries. Piano recitals survived, glowing parent-teacher conferences, and the occasional good deed were all cheeseburger-worthy in our house. Fast food was a big deal—especially when sanctioned by my wheatgerm-pushing mother.
Craig’s childhood rewards looked a little different. His good behavior earned him a visit to the neighborhood market—aptly named Merrill’s—where he could carefully choose one mouth-watering treat. Our own kids later measured their victories in trips to Friendly’s for sundaes, and once in a while, a glorious banana split.
These weren’t everyday celebrations. You were expected to turn in your homework and be a good teammate. But when you faced a fear, showed kindness, or rose above expectations—that’s when something special happened.
So knowing that Merrill Mischief has become the “what are we doing next?” place for so many kids in our community fills me with gratitude and joy. We’re honored to be part of these moments—tiny victories that feel huge—and maybe, just maybe, to live on in a few childhood memories as the ultimate reward for doing something brave.
And honestly? There’s nothing sweeter than that
